Partners Doug Ankenman and Richard Cernosek announced plans to build Bluff Manor Apartments, a 20-unit complex on Monument Hill, on a 4.3-acre tract paralleling State Spur 92, the Monument Hill Park entry road between the Clothes Closet and Hwy. 77. The complex, estimated to be completed in eight months, would include 15 two-story and five one-story apartments. Ten would have woodburning fireplaces. Space was available for an additional 20 apartments and a swimming pool to be built at an unspecified future date.

O.B. Young, who lived on S. Franklin St. in La Grange, killed a 30-inch coral snake in his backyard with a garden hoe, his second in the spring of 1974.

Sheriff’s deputies were investigating two burglaries that occurred on Tuesday night. The City Garage at Carmine was ransacked and about $50 was stolen. Small change was missing after a break-in at Nickerson Farms between Schulenburg and Weimar.

When forest fires fanned by 25 mph winds raced uncontrolled through the Davis Mountains of West Texas, blackening more than 120,000 acres the previous week, a one-ton tanker fire truck and crew from the La Grange Texas Forest Service office responded. T.L. Underwood of La Grange and R.T. Lewis of Smithville joined 70 other responders on the fire line near Balmorhea.

Two nip-and-tuck thrillers opened the La Grange Little League season Monday night with the Indians nosing out the Yankees, 2-1, and the Giants easing past the Cardinals, 1-0. Jeff Cook of the Indians tossed a four-hitter, fanned seven, socked a double and was accorded errorless fielding support by notching the hill win. One of the licks off Cook was a homerun by Donald Bertsch, the only one scored by the losers. Mike Kovar, the losing hurler, also gave up only four base knocks and whiffed eight. The Giants got only one bingle off Don Huelsebusch, a double by Greg Trlicek, but rode it for the 1-0 victory. Winning pitcher Trlicek doled out three safeties and fanned eights, getting flawless field support.

Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Ludmila Janda, 87, of Hostyn; Mrs. Anna Amelia Ginzel, 84, a native of La Grange; Frank Hajovsky, 54, of Holman; Mrs. Katie Lange, 84, of La Grange; Miss Emma Matula, 88, of Schulenburg; and William F. Zimmermann, 79, a lifelong Fayette County resident.

Fourteen Fayette County students were candidates for graduation from Blinn College. They were: Bennie James Schertz, Barbara Jean Chovanec, Bruce Donald Dopslauf, Sue Ann Fritsch, Ruth Ann Wessels, Nancy Irene Zingelmann and Alan Ray Pyburn from La Grange; Clarence Joe Svoboda from Ellinger; Patricia Ann Bush and Richard Allen Walla from West Point; Rebecca Marie Kasmiersky from Fayetteville; Joan Marie Ermis from Plum; and Douglas Ray Kasper and Lonnie Ray Lehmann from Warda.

Over 130 persons attended the Home Demonstration Achievement Day program at the Home Demonstration Building on Tuesday. Program committee chair Mrs. C.W. Fritsch served as mistress of ceremonies. HD council chair Mrs. Emily Blume gave the welcome.

Jacquelyn Wessels of Fayette Memorial Hospital was among the 12 graduates of the Blinn Vocational Nursing Program.

Two students from the cosmetology class at La Grange Vocational High School won places in the State Vocational Industrial Clubs of America competition in San Antonio. Cindy Hajek, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Hajek, placed first in the pin curl division and Barbara Hluchanek, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hluchanek, won fourth in the permanent wave division.

At Fayetteville High School, Paulette Minarcik, with a projected average of 92.63, was named valedictorian, and Darlene Weyand, with a projected average of 90.68, salutatorian.

La Grange High School senior Marcus Cook was presented with the La Grange Jaycee’s Athlete of the Year trophy at the all-sports banquet. Cook was a three-year letterman in football and a two-year letterman in baseball.

The federal government approved $27,000 to plan new waste water treatment facilities on Monument Hill, according to information provided by U.S. Rep. J.J. Pickle. The financing awarded through the Environmental Protection Agency was to fund pre-construction work.
