REMEMBER WHEN?
A prominent dairyman and rancher in the La Grange community, Donald Dopslauf, announced plans to build Fountainview Apartments and Townhouses on Upper Line St. in La Grange. The 17-unit complex was to include 12 one- and two-bedroom apartments and five two-story townhouses. Storage and washer-dryer facilities, as well as off-street parking, would be offered. Clovis Heimsath Associates, Inc. of Houston was selected as the architect. Dopslauf served as a director of The First National Bank of La Grange and Farmers Lumber Co., Inc.
Fritz Lobpries defeated Lee Mueller Jr. by a margin of 342 votes out of the 4,783 cast in the hotly- contested judge’s race in the Fayette County Democratic Primary Election. Paul Jaster was reelected Precinct 2 County Commissioner without a runoff. Harvey Albers was reelected Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace and Norman C. Krischke defeated Lois V. Brauner in the race for Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace. Over 55% of eligible Fayette County voters cast ballots. They also gave J.J. (Jake) Pickle a massive vote of confidence to continue as Congressman for the 10th Texas District. Governor Briscoe was also soundly endorsed, although not by the margin Pickle received.
The La Grange Leopards pounded out a 12-4 victory over Rice Consolidated at Altair Tuesday afternoon, taking a 9-1 loop record into the playoffs and leaving the Wharton Tigers one game in arrears. The victory was La Grange’s 20th in 22 starts for the year, and the zone flag was the third straight for the 1973 state champions. Neal Miller, rebounding strongly from his 4-0 loss to Wharton a week earlier, spun a three-hitter, striking out eight. His teammates afforded him great batting support with two home runs laced into their 15-hit attack. Except for spells of wildness when he walked eight, Miller had no trouble with the Raiders, using his sharpbreaking curves with deadly effect. Ronnie Sulik was the big stick for the Leps, going three for four, and powering a homer in the fourth inning with a mate on board. Mark Muzny led off that rollicking frame in which the Leopard batted a massive round-tripper that carried nearly 350 feet. Steve Kovar was first up and first on. He stole the first of three bases and came in to score on Sulik’s single, which also scored Kenny Hatfield, who walked and then stole second. The Leps stole an incredible nine altogether.
Fayette County Sheriff T.J. Flournoy reported in April that his department investigated quite a few burglaries and several cattle thefts, in addition to attending to routine matters ranging from DWI to wrecks. Calling attention to the increasing number of hot checks being reported, he advised local merchants to be more careful about whom they accepted checks from.
Fayette County sheriff’s department was working on a trio of burglaries that took place Tuesday and Wednesday nights. When burglars broke into Casper’s Store at Warda, they got away with the cash register and an undetermined amount of money. In Flatonia, burglars broke into Kolar’s Store, and at Ledbetter, an attempt was made to break into Lehmann’s Store. Although the crooks didn’t gain entrance, two bicycles belonging to the Lehmann family were missing.
A fire, which really wasn’t a fire but rather a lot of smoke, did little damage to the Pastime Club early Sunday night. At about 6:45 p.m., the breaker on the music box cut out, according to manager Mrs. Lawrence Ulbrich. When she opened the closet door to reset the switch, she smelled smoke and turned in the alarm. Firefighters cut several holes in the floor and found a smoldering 2x6 floor joint. However, the cause of the smoke remained a mystery.
Gulf and Texaco service stations in La Grange closed Tuesday because of a lack of gasoline supplies. Other stations reported short supplies because their April gasoline quotas had run out. Petzold’s Gulf Station was short on gas Tuesday and closed rather than cut into their May quota. Berry’s Exxon ran out of regular gas and had only premium on Wednesday. Mr. Berry said his station would close at 7 p.m. instead of 9 p.m., and would conserve gasoline by continuing not to open on Sundays.
