Proposed Power Plant Property Acquisition Could Force Condemnation
The City of Austin and the Lower Colorado River Authority planned to use condemnation proceedings as a last resort to acquire land for their new joint electric plant, according to LCRA General Manager Charles Herring. He said an effort would be made to negotiate to buy the land from landowners but, if necessary, the City of Austin and the LCRAwould condemn the property in the public interest. Herring said it was necessary to build the plant to serve LCRA’s 800,000 customers. Herring noted no one had volunteered the use of their land for the plant.
About 33 landowners in the area between La Grange and Fayetteville chosen for the proposed multi-million dollar coal-fired electric generating plant and cooling lake, met at the home of H.C. Mills. He was named chairman of their group, the Fayette County Land Owners Protective Association, and Mrs. E.A. Barker was chosen as secretary of the group that would oppose construction of the facility. Also elected was a steering committee composed of John M. Strange, John C. Schuhmacher, Sherwood Crane, Charlie Polasek Jr. and Adolph and Benno Schmidt.
Robert E. Harbers of West Point tragically lost his life in a mobile home fire at Plum about midnight Saturday night. Nine La Grange volunteer firefighters in two trucks responded when the call came in, but the mobile home occupied by Mr. Harbers had died by the time they arrived, according to Fire Chief Rudolph Voss. Gary Krause, justice of the peace from Flatonia, investigated and made a report stating Mr. Harbers perished in the blaze. A World War II veteran and a farmer, he was born May 27, 1922, at Prairie Valley to Richard T. and Clara Kirchhofer Harbers.
An all-time high of 8,690 Fayette County residents would be eligible to vote in the May 4, 1974, primary election. That number exceeded by 756 the total for the 1972 primaries.
No leads had developed on the recent robbery at Schulze Garage. About $247.81 disappeared from the cash register while Carl Schulze was at lunch. He surmised the money was taken when an employee had gone to the restroom or was out front waiting on a customer. Schulz said the employee did not notice the money missing until later in the day.
Funeral services were held for: Joseph R. Skubal, 73, of Fayetteville; Albert J. Hahn, 64, of Swiss Alp; and Herman F. Giebel, 75, of La Grange.
After serving almost five years as a clerk in the Fayetteville Post Office, Jerry F. Kubala Jr. was appointed postmaster of the Industry Post Office. Alton J. Pesick, who had served as a clerk in the La Grange Post Office, was appointed postmaster for the Ledbetter Post Office.
Jerry Gosch of Cistern was honored on his birthday with a supper in the home of Mr. and Mrs. August Stall in Rosanky. Attending were Mrs. Gertrude Pavlica and Raphael.
Congressman J.J. (Jake) Pickle was being honored at an appreciation barbecue at the Bier Garten at the Fayette County Fairgrounds on April 23. A social hour from 6 to 7 p.m. was to precede the meal. Tickets cost $3.50 in advance.
David Janda of Hostyn was named to the Prep All-American Football Program for 1973-74, making him eligible for the Prep All-American Football National Awards – Prep 100 Squad, Super Eleven Team and Cum Laude. According to Coach & Athlete Magazine, nominations for the program came from high school coaches, college recruiters and sports writers. Janda, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Q. Janda, was a senior at Bishop Forest High School in Schulenburg.
The La Grange Leopards parlayed two-hit pitching by Kenny Hatfield with 12 base hits of their own in breezing to a 6-0 victory over the Columbus Cardinals at Columbus Tuesday afternoon. The victory left the Leps 7-0 in District 13-3A west zone play and 18-1 for the season.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Koether of Swiss Alp celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, April 7, at the Swiss Alp Farm Bureau Hall.

(Buck) Tiedt were honored on their 30th wedding anniversary at the VFW Hall in La Grange on April 13. Relatives and friends assisted in the serving with Mrs. Nettie Mae Freudenberg in charge. Loydie Tiedt and Georgia Vasek were married on April 8, 1944, in North Carolina where Mr. Tiedt was in the military. In 1946, the couple returned to La Grange, where they had made their home ever since.
Mrs. and Mrs. Ben M. Halamicek were pleasantly surprised on April 14 with a 40th wedding anniversary party at the weekend home of their daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. and Mrs. John E. Stanley. Ben Halamicek and Vlasta Sula were married in Fayetteville on April 16, 1934.
Under legal notices in the classified ads, Lloyd E. Kolbe, licensee of Radio Station KVLG, filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission for renewal of his license to operate KVLG on 1570 kc.
