Recognize Decay

To the Editor:

Charles Schumer has been captured on film on the steps of the Treasury in Washington and again in the Federal House chambers ranting about President Trump’s alleged abuse of “the rule of law”.

Gerard Baker explained in the WSJ last week, “the Democratic Party has chosen to defend illegal migrants over citizens, teachers unions over parents and children, criminals over victims, and men-turnedwomen over girls” these past few years. He then asks, “Do they really want to defend “the right of permanent government officials to spend money without hindrance from the president’s delegates?” That is exactly what Schumer, a leader of the Democratic Party, wants to defend.

Mr. Baker suggested the Department of Government Efficiency could be named the “Department of Government Accountability.”

Could MAGA stand for “Making American Government Accountable?”

Could DOGE stand for “Democrats Officially Getting Exposed?”

In the February 2025 publication of Hillsdale’s Imprimis, Editor and author Roger Kimball gave a talk titled “Restoring American culture.” He reminded his audience of Trump’s declaration “that he and his supporters were the party of common sense.” I laughed out loud when I read Mr. Kimball’s following statements: “At the beginning of his Discourse on Method, René Descartes (known for his work in philosophy, mathematics, and science in the early 1600s) said that common sense was “the most widely distributed thing in the world.” As Mr. Kimball states, Descartes was “imperfectly acquainted with the realities of today.”

Mr. Kimball went on to ask the following questions: “is it common sense to pretend that men can be women? Or to pretend that you do not know what a woman is? Is it common sense to open the borders of your country and then to spend truckloads of taxpayer dollars to feed, house, and nurture the millions of illegal migrants who have poured in? In the cultural realm, is it common sense to celebrate art that is indistinguishable from pornography or some other form of psychopathology? Is it common sense to rewrite history (the 1619 Project now being taught) to soothe the wounded feelings of people who crave victimhood?”

I agree with Mr. Kimball that common sense is hard to define but we know when it is absent. (I recommend you read Imprimis, February 2025/vol 54/issue 2).

If there is no recognition of the state of decay or ruin, there will be no restoration.

For too long, conservatives have been on the side lines and have allowed the anti-American socialist ideas from the people who populate our institutions of learning, economy, politics, and religion to creep and penetrate our way of thinking like mold in wallboard. The devastating effects of decay and ruin have been experienced by all citizens. It’s time to clean things up. Moldy wallboard must be removed for healthy living space.

There must be no compromise on values and freedom.

Trump was elected to expose and clean up government’s abuse of spending.

He’s going to get a lot of flack from those who lack common sense.
