Planter Box Fiasco

To the Editor:

We all have our take on the planter built in La Grange to attempt to decrease jay-walking from the courthouse to businesses across Travis St. And all are free to feel for or against the building of that planter.

The interesting take on the planter is that it was thought out and built without ever deciding that it was really necessary to spend our tax dollars. There was no thought process into the watering of possible flora in that planter as it would eventually fall on the people of Fayette County.

Now there is talk of not planting anything in the planter as the heat in the summer and traffic would generate too much heat to grow and maintain plants in that planter. If not plants the thought process went to possibly getting with an artist to generate public art to beautify the planter. I’m sure that with time the planter will be used as a public trash can and will cause the need of city workers to clean out that trash.

I’m wondering if moving forward with the planter just might be cheaper in the long run to remove the planter and replace the lost parking. Since the planter was not part of the historical downtown area, maybe the thought should be to return the downtown area to its original splendor.
