Outhouse Trivia

To the editor:

My heritage to Fayette County goes back a long way even to Karl Bauer in Round Top. Although I have never lived in Fayette County, I still have a strong feeling for it. At one time, I owned property on Buckner’s Creek that once was my great grandfather’s. Now to the point of this letter.

I always enjoy reading Florian Kana’s articles in the Record. I only wish he would let Elaine Thomas publish them in a book. The latest story about an outhouse reminded me of something.

At one time a “Crescent” was posted on outhouses. How many of you remember seeing an outhouse with a “Star” on it? In order to define His and Her outhouses, a “Star” designated the one for Men. A “Crescent” designated the one for Women. For the Men, it was more convenient to just step behind a bush and let go. Because of this, after a while, the “Star” just stopped being used and disappeared.

Just for your information.
