The Old Outhouse
The outhouse sitting on these antique wheels itself is over 100 years old. It was given to me, Florian Kana, in the late 1950s. House-movers, George and Florian Kana and crew, had just moved off two log cabins for a client. This outhouse was located right between the two cabins. The lady selling the cabins said she no longer needed it since she just had indoor plumbing installed. So, if I wanted it I could have it. Well, I never turned down anything that was free. We rolled it on a truck and took it home. For about 40 years I used it for a deer stand – as you can see by the gun ports cut out in the door and sides. (One unique thing about having an outhouse for a deer stand is after drinking all that hot coffee and eating a doughnut or two, you find out you have “a need to go!”) With the deer being active outside, all I had to do was to lift up the lid. Of course, being down wind from that big buck helped.
After loosing my deer lease, I wasn’t about to leave my trusty stand behind, so I moved it back home and mounted it on these antique wooden moving dollies. Frequently I used it as a “Parade Float” in the local celebrations in La Grange, Schulenburg, Weimar and Columbus. It served as a great advertisement for our house moving business: Kana Brothers, Inc. Even won a few awards with it. People enjoyed watching the “Flintstone Movers” roll by.
