The Jury’s Role

To the Editor:

Mr. Rollins, in his letter To the Editor, indicated he was “at the trial” of Mr. Wotipka. So was I, as a juror, and I can assure him and the “people of Fayette County” that we, the jury, did not “act out of an emotional response to the heinous nature of the charges,” nor did we consider anything that was not admitted as evidence. As instructed, this included both the opening and closing statements, a lot of what Mr. Rollins regurgitated in his letter. His letter serves as a reminder that the standards that a juror must uphold are very different from being just a spectator “at the trial.”
