Fayetteville Area Landfill Location Unresolved
County commissioners deferred approval on the site selection for a sanitary landfill in Precinct 2, one mile northwest of Ellinger. The Texas State Department of Health had advised Fayette County Acting Judge Fritz Lobpries that the proposed location presented a potential hazard to ground and surface water quality because it was in permeable soils overlying a principal aquifer in the area. The state refused to approve the site unless the sides and bottom of the excavation were properly lined with an impermeable liner such as clay, plastic membrane or equivalent.
William J. Merrill of Houston, attorney for the Fayette County Landowners Protective Association, sent a notice of deposition to Austin Mayor Roy Butler and a demand to the Lower Colorado RiverAuthority for documents relating to the proposed LCRA-City of Austin coal-fueled electric generating plant in Fayette County. Bechtel was surveying and testing the area under a temporary restraining order against the landowners.
Assessed valuations for 1974 tax purposes in the City of La Grange increased over the previous year by more than $600,000. The tax roll for the new season starting Oct. 1 was $6,485,975 compared with $5,880,140 for 1973.
Fayette Water Supply Corporation announced two advancements. First, county commissioners agreed to work with the corporation concerning easements for laying water mains along county roads. The following day, Frisch Auf! Valley Country Club gave the corporation a tract of land for its well and water storage tank.
The Kasper & Michalk Gin in La Grange processed its first 1974 cotton bales shortly before noon Thursday. The three bales belonged to Lavaca County farmer Victor Technik, who farmed between Moulton and Shiner. The bales weighed 475, 535 and 590 pounds, respectively. The first bale from Fayette County was ginned for John Poncik of the Rabb’s Prairie community on Saturday. He brought in a total of five bales.
Trustees of the Round Top-Carmine Independent School District adopted an operating budget of $192,000 for the 1974-75 school year. That was approximately $8,000 more than the cost of all operations in the prior year. A spokesman said the increase was primarily due to teacher salary increases. The Fayetteville Independent School District trustees approved a $450,779 budget. The discount rate for school taxes paid in October was changed from 3% to 5%.
Endeavoring to make the department self-supporting, La Grange City Council tacked on a 50¢ increase on the minimum water charge to customers’ bills. That increased the minimum cost from $2 to $2.50 per month for 3,000 gallons of water on a ¾-inch meter.
Gold’n Crisp nosed out First National Bank by 6-5 in a Ladies Softball League encounter. Nancy Malota got two of Crisp’s hits, both singles, while Barbara Kalina had a triple for First National. Anita Dippel was the winning pitcher and Barbara Kalina was charged with the loss.
John J. Beck of Cistern was named interim Fayette County school superintendent by the county board of trustees. He succeeded Fritz E. Lobpries, who had resigned to become interim county judge. Mr. Beck had been a teacher in the Cistern Rural High School district continuously since 1952, having retired at the end of last term. The new interim superintendent was the father of County Attorney Daniel Beck.
The Texas Department of Health was holding a free clinic in La Grange to perform a skin test for tuberculosis. A spokesperson for the organization said that if a skin test was positive, it didn’t necessarily mean the person had TB but had likely been in contact with someone who did. An x-ray would be necessary to ensure the person did not have TB in their lungs.
The La Grange Leopards and Yoakum Bulldogs were to scrimmage on Friday afternoon in La Grange. Coach Ben Bloomer said he and his staff were elated over the good turnout of grid hopefuls: 63 lads, many of them freshmen, who had turned out for drills the prior week. Bloomer reiterated that some of the better first-year performers would be moved to the junior varsity squad in order to give more lads a chance to compete under fire.
