Excluding Ukraine

Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

Reading the Record this Friday there was articles about support for the Ukraine. It made me interested in why Ukraine was not part of the European Union. It lies on the European Seismic Plate and is neighbors to several EU Members. It had applied to join the EU, but there was push-back from several members of the EU. Mainly: Netherland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany.

The main reason for not having Ukraine in the EU is nothing more than politics. How can you exclude a European Country from joining the European Union? In fact the part of Russia west of the Ural Mountains is actually European. If those making up the European Union wanted to keep the EU an exclusive club they should have give a better reason then nothing at all except we have too much on our plate right now.

I wonder if the EU had made Ukraine a member if there would have been an invasion by Russia. Ukraine talks about joining NATO, but that looks like it will never happen. If the EU never wanted The Ukraine then why should they be in NATO?

Sounds like they are in the middle between Europe and Russia as a step-sister being used as a punching bag.
