Election Integrity
To the editor:
A letter to the editor last week told us that we are believing a lie if we think that illegal immigrants are voting and asks the question “What evidence do you have for that?” The author gives us three reasons to support his position: verification of citizenship by the states, risk to the illegal voter, and the insignificant number of violations.
Regarding verification: Voter registration is mostly administered on an honor system. The federal form for voter registration requires checking a box. It does not require proof of citizenship. There is currently no effective national data base with which to verify citizenship. Texas is one of only a few states that have even tried to clean its voter registration rolls.
Regarding risk: I can find no evidence that any non-citizen has been deported, fined or imprisoned for voting. Millions have come here illegally. They have been welcomed for breaking our immigration laws. Sanctuary cities refuse to refer even criminal migrants to ICE for deportation. Why would they be concerned about another law that is not being enforced?
Regarding significance: How many illegal votes does it take to be significant? In 2008 in Minnesota Democrat Al Franken defeated incumbent Republican Senator Norm Coleman by 312 votes. Later it was determined that more than 1,000 convicted felons had voted illegally. Franken cast the 60th vote that gave America Obamacare. The last election for president was decided by a few thousand votes in a few states. There were about 45 million non-citizens living in the United States in 2021. Millions more have been allowed to live here by the current administration.
How many of them voting in tight races in key states this year would it take to have a profound effect on our country?
