Don’t Leave Downtown
To the Editor:
I just read the news article in your Fayette County Record “Schulenburg Abandoning City Hall Renovation” regarding the decision, by the Schulenburg City Council, to abandon the restoration of a beautiful downtown Schulenburg historic building.
I also find it down right ridiculous that: 1) They have no cost for possible restoration and no cost for “another site” but have identified possible sites.
2) As for the downtown building, Walker said the Council wants to put it up for sale as-is. However, she plans to ask the Council to consider a bid for waterproofing the building before it goes up for sale. She said the work would cost about $15,000.
How on earth does the city administrator make the decision for the tax payers to abandon this historic building? Also, I’m not an architect but common sense tells me if $15,000 waterproofs the building for sale, why not continue on with restoration – especially since there have been no quotes for restoration.
The original building is two stories. Why not, using new materials, rebuild the interior to support this second floor? If additional space is needed, why not?
Leaving downtown Schulenburg for a bigger complex sounds very disturbing. I would hate to see a city administrator in total control of such an important decision for the City of Schulenburg. Plus does moving outside the “city streets” mean it is still City Hall?
