Candidate Character

To the Editor:

Several recent letters To the Editor of the FCR, if I understood them correctly, made references to voting with a Christian mindset. A phrase I have heard many times comes to mind: “The devil is in the details.” Are voters applying the Biblical principles when they vet and support candidates?

I am extremely grateful for the Judeo-Christian heritage of the U.S. As I reviewed these letters, what came to my mind was the following order of Bible (NIV) scripture verses that support my Christian worldview: Isaiah 53:6 “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way…” Hosea 4: 6 “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.”

John 8:31 ‘If you hold to my teaching you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”

The truth referred to is a spiritual truth, which is available to every individual and seems to be lacking in today’s culture. Every individual can make the choice to accept or reject this spiritual truth.

Sadly, I see the current culture in the U.S. similar to Isaiah’s and Hosea’s day.

The Primary elections are over. Not all the candidates I voted for were winners, but I’m sure that is true for other voters.

For me, to be a winner in a political race requires being an example, having a mindset of service and accepting the authority of the oath of office the candidate must take. Every individual seeking a public office must show in their daily lives respect for the values set forth in the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Texas Constitution to represent freedom for their constituents.

Freedom matters. Freedom is worth fighting for.

All the way back to Biblical days, we see the results of the loss of freedom. Nations were ordained in the Bible book of Genesis—the people were “scattered”, the builders of the great city could not understand each other because their language was confused.

We have a similar situation today. There are those who confuse our English language by creating new definitions for words and concepts. (For example, neither critical race theory or the diversity, equity, and inclusion agenda are illustrations of social justice.) The current federal administration is not discerning the language or the character of our national enemies. Consequently, we the people are literally paying the price. Voting is a citizen’s responsibility and privilege. Who you vote for matters. The character of every candidate must be vetted honestly. Are they walking the walk or just telling constituents what they want to hear?

Elections have consequences.
