Book Crisis
In this great nation of ours we are privileged to have numerous reading resources at our disposal whether it be bound books or wireless electronic reading devices. We also have the freedom to become authors to express our feelings or compose our life story.
Books have been controversial many times within history. For example, the Bible and works by Shakespeare have been banned for hundreds of years. The first book banned in the United States was written by Thomas Moore in 1637 titled “The New England Canaan.”According to the World History Encyclopedia, the book is a critical view of the colonization methods practiced in North America by the English. The book alludes to the story of the Hebrews under their leader Joshua taking the land of Canaan from the indigenous population and replacing the older population with their own. In Morton’s opinion, the English were doing the same thing to the Indians, taking their land, destroying their culture all in the name of God.
Debate over explicit sexual content in our schools has become headline news over and over again. Personally, I don’t understand why young children should be subjected to these types of books. Their innocence should be protected. They should be concerned more about sports, math, science and history, rather than be confused or misguided after reading inappropriate subject matter. Whatever happened to moral standards?
Take for example, one of the best sellers right now is the book written by Britney Spears. Of course you know who is pushing this book? Yes, the liberal media. They can’t seem to get enough of the story. The media is emphasizing one part of the book where Britney Spears becomes pregnant and then has an abortion. First, who buys this book and second, why? Are Americans so disillusioned and hungry for drama?
At one point, the book, “The Spare,” written by Prince Henry was also a number one best seller. This man left the British royal family to have a more private life in the USA. Both he and his wife are constantly in the lime-light and he writes a tell-all book. Does that sound like a private life to you? I don’t understand why anyone would want to spend their hard-earned money on a book written by a very privileged individual who has done nothing but degrade his family.
I bought a paperback book that I thought would be fun to read. The sexual content in the book was horrible and disgusting. I have never thrown a book away, but I threw that one in the trash. I did not want to pass it on to someone else. I have heard, many times, that sex and violence sell. That’s sad. Personally, I think great writing sells!
You are probably asking what I should read. In my opinion, Americans need to have discretion choosing what they read. There are so many authors, who live in Fayette and surrounding counties and cities who write very inspiring, clean, and exciting books. To name a few; Beth Wiseman, Audrey Wick, DiAnn Mills, Max Lucado. We are so lucky to have a beautiful library that offers many kinds of genres as well as having very helpful staff.
If I had my way, the Bible would always be the number one best seller. Of course, millions and millions of copies of this book have been sold around the world. It teaches people to love and respect, something our world is lacking right now. That’s my answer to the book crisis.
