On Book Banning
To the Editor:
When I read the disturbing story by Regina Keilers about the fate of four books and the discussion about it, I was floored by the reasons to ban the books, the procedure to come to it and the time it took to discuss it. Fortunately your editorial in Friday’s paper covered most of my opinions about it. I believe that whatever process you put in place to satisfy every individual is bound to fail. It should be the responsibility of the parents to decide which books should be read by their children. This parental control could be placed at the school library and is similar to parental control over watching TV and internet. None of them are full proof, but much better than individual crusades to ban books. We should have confidence in our librarians to select books for a broad audience.
Thank you for covering this situation.
