Letter to the Editor Raise Concerns But Don’t Berate

I am embarrassed and ashamed for the actions of my county commissioner, Mr. Berckenhoff, as reported in The Fayette County Record last week. While Mr. Brossmann’s position seemed to be similar, I’m focusing on Mr. Berckenhoff as I am a constituent of Precinct 3.

I expect all elected officials to be problem solvers and to approach each situation with the highest integrity and professionalism while leaving their political vendettas at the door. It seems quite apparent from the reporting that Mr. Berckenhoff has no clue what the tech backlog actually looks like and falsely laid the blame at Mr. Moreau’s feet. While there are things Mr. Moreau could have undoubtedly done better (the pickup issue, hazard mitigation, etc.), it shows a high degree of unprofessionalism to berate Mr. Moreau in the public forum.

As I drive downAirport Road every day and throughout other roads in Precinct 3, I personally do not feel Mr. Berckenhoff has much room to complain about people not doing their jobs. This road is pitiful as are many other rural roads in this precinct. We suffer drainage issues, potholes, and buckling of the road itself. The intersection of Airport Rd. and Bordovsky Rd. was blinded due to over-growth in the ditch and at one point weeds/vines had covered up the stop sign. These issues weren’t addressed by Mr. Berckenhoff’s office, but by me. If Mr. Berckenhoff were as proactive as he seems to think he is, this would have been noticed and remediated by his office.

The point here, is that we should ensure our own porch is clean before we go criticizing others. Raising the concerns and then berating Mr. Moreau in a public forum shows a lack of basic professionalism. It is well within Mr. Berckenhoff’s right to raise his concerns, but publicly berating someone illustrates a higher purpose (obviously political) than the just merely raising concerns.
