Oppermann Part of Stadium Ground-Breaking Ceremony

La Grange native Anthony Oppermann, pictured above, second from right, is the Assistant General Manager for the Richmond (Virginia) Flying Squirrels, the Double-A minor league baseball team of the San Francisco Giants, and in that role, he was one of those selected for a special ground-breaking at Richmond’s new $110 million baseball stadium last week. Anthony is the son of Eddie and Laurie Oppermann of La Grange. Shown below is a close up of Oppermann’s commemorative shovel at the event.

Schulenburg vs. Burton

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Schulenburg Records: Schulenburg is 1-1. Of Note: Burton started the season with a 32-21 loss to Holland but bounced back last week to edge Hearne 6-0. A 76-yard touchdown pass from Burton sophomore quarterback Kayden Patterson to senior wide receiver Drayton Oakes was the only score. By contrast points were being scored in bunches last week when Schulenburg lost to Rogers 63-56, despite 394 passing yards and six touchdowns by Shorthorn quarterback Aaron Janecek. Byron Johnson caught 12 pass es for 232 yards and three touchdowns for the ‘Horns, and Jayse Janda also had three touchdown catches ... Burton went 6-5 last season and returned six offensive five defensive starters from last year’s team.

Sacred Heart Rallies to Beat Flatonia 21-20

Flatonia lost a heartbreaker Friday as a 13-point Bulldogs lead slipped away in a 21-20 loss to Hallettsville Sacred Heart.

Flatonia jumped out to a 20-7 lead in this game thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from Beck Zimmerman to Keegan Green and a Caysen Perez touchdown run.

But Sacred Heart fought back to win it with a go-ahead Riley Haas touchdown run in the fourth quarter Both teams now have 1-1 records.

Flatonia hosts Nixon-Smiley this week.

Those Mustangs are 0-2 and coming off a 30-22 loss to Three Rivers.

Club Volleyball Tryouts

The new La Grange Sports Academy is holding Club Volleyball tryouts Sept. 29 and Oct. 20 at La Grange Middle School from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. There will be three teams, 11-under, 12-under and 13-under. You are asked to register before tryout dates and bring a $25 tryout fee, and athletic shoes and knee pads.
