Youth from across south Texas will display their artwork at the annual ARTS Emerging Artists Competition opening on Aug. 6 in Fayetteville. The opening reception and awards presentation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at the ARTS Ross Gallery located at 114 North Live Oak, on the square, in Fayetteville. This year’s competition will award $5,000 of prize money to the winners. The competition has drawn over 70 entries from youth in sixth through twelfth grade. This exhibition is just one of the many programs offered by Arts for Rural Texas that encourages youth to be creative and express their individual voices. It is the organization’s desire to nurture artistic excellence and creative thinking while elevating the quality of life and economic developmentin all of the communities. The Emerging Artists Competition is a highlight each year as these young people offer their creations for all to see. The exhibition is underwritten by Arne and Mary Le Johnson who encourage the youth. They seek to support youth and their creative process. They recognize their bravery and encourage them to listen to the stories their art will tell. They along with ARTS recognize the skills that the participants put on display and the skills they will carry with themthrough their lifetime. In conjunction with the Emerging Artists Competition, the ARTS’ summer programs included six week art camps in three communities. Here, over 200 children enjoyed painting, paper making, movie making, photography, sculpting, jewelry making, quilting, theater andmore. The organization is currently approaching twenty years in service and has a mission to enrich lives through art education, performances and cultural experiences. As Albert Einstein stated, “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”
