St. Mark’s Medical Center (SMMC) recently hosted nine area rising high school students as part of the inaugural Fayette County EMS’ Health Profession Summer Camp.

As part of the weeklong camp, students and EMS personnel toured various SMMC departments and spoke with several healthcare professionals about their roles, education and why they enjoy working atSMMC.On other camp days, the students observed the EMS team, learned about services they provide, and equipment they use throughout their day-today activities. The students also met Air Evac Lifeteam 47, who landed their helicopter, spoke to the students about their careers and invited them to sit inside the aircraft. Additionally, students also earned CPR and First Aid/ Stop the Bleed certificationsduring the camp.“This was a great day to showcase some of our key services and team members to the students,” said SMMC President and CEO Mark Kimball. “We thank our partners at the Fayette County EMS for allowing us to share in their program and hopefully help light the students’ curiosity and interest in future healthcare careers, righthere.”“Our team worked hard to make the students’ week withus an engaging and rewarding experience, and we’re excited about what we learned to make the next camp even stronger,” said Fayette County EMS Director Josh Vandever. “Our community schools produce bright, eager students who may not be aware of what is involved in or available locally in a healthcare career. We want to help them see how rewarding it is to care for our community members when they are most vulnerable.”
