The Fayette County Record
Former Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka has been out of office for nearly four yearsnow. But he’s been busy.
Over that span, Janecka and his wife Margie have been putting the finishing touches on a book he calls “a labor of love.” He started it four decades ago.
The book is called “Dubina a place of freedom and hope” and is an extensive look at the southern Fayette County communityof Dubina – the firstCzech settlement of Texas.Ed Janecka grew up in Dubina and he and Margie still live there. He learned to speak Czech before he learned English, and his great-great-grandfather was one of the founders of Dubina.
“We wanted to make a book that let people know a little about Dubina and the important role it played in this state,” Ed said.
The book starts with the area’s origins as a native American settlement, then goes into the early Czech settlers and the area’s progression through various wars, etc.
“It also covers various customs, weddings, funerals, hog butchering, wine making,” Edsaid. The book also includes listings of those baptized at the Dubina Catholic Church, those buried in the cemetery and lotsof historical photos.
Including the index, the book weighs in at 355 pages and the cover art was done by Fayetteville artist Pat Johnson.
The book is for sale for $40 at The Fayette County Record office, The Schulenburg Sticker, The Fayette Public Library/ Archives and MG in Weimar.
