Arts for Rural Texas opened “Patterned Beauty,” an art exhibition by artist Jill Maytorena. The spectacular, unique work is on exhibit at the Ross Gallery, 114 North Live Oak St., Fayetteville. Maytorena will offer an Artist Talk on Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. The event is free to the public and offers an opportunity to meet the artist, enjoy her sharing of her creative process, and have an opportunity to ask questions of the artist. Maytorena’s paintings are a complex combination of patterns and textures as diverse as her life. She discovered the power of creativity at a young age and was greatly influenced by the places she lived including England and Texas. Her family artistically guided and nurtured her creativity with art, museum experiences, and homes that were filled with crafts and textiles.

James Dick Porch Concert to Return to Festival Hill Oct. 8

In the beginning an old house from La Grange was moved to Festival Hill. By 1976, concerts were held outdoors on the porch with James Dick on the piano. Yo-Yo Ma even performed on the porch as a very young musician. It was the beginning of what was to become a 51 yearold performing arts center in Fayette County. A very unique and special benefit performance by Internationally famous classical pianist and founder of the Round Top Festival Institute ~ James Dick will be held on the porch Saturday, October 8 at 6:30 p.m. The evening will be delightful; on the porch seating, at a table up close or under the trees ... all under the stars. Fancy Hor’ D’oeuvres and wine accompanies each seat and table purchase. In the event of inclement weather the event will be moved into the Festival Hill Concert Hall Stage with seating on the stage. Proceeds from the event go to advance the classical music festival held annually in June and July. Over 90 scholarships are given to young artist who audition to attend the 6 week -long institute. A free concert is also offered during the Festival for all citizens of Fayette County and beyond to enjoy and must be underwritten. Ticket prices start at $150. Reserve and deluxe tables are also available and of course seating on the porch. To see a seating chart and pricing go to festivalhill.org.

Biggest-Ever Turnout for Fayetteville School Reunion

“The Annual Fayetteville Schools All Class Reunion was the best turnout that we’ve ever had,” said Betty Fritsch. “About 225 alumni attended. Everyone enjoyed the great food prepared by Joe’s Place. DJ Aaron provided us with great music from the past and everyone danced into the night. A big thank you needs to go out to members of the classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 for hosting the reunion. Also, thanks to Joe’s Place and Mayor Mike for all their help in making things go so well. It was a great day in Fayetteville, Texas. We hope the next class up to host, the Class of 1973, will continue this tradition.”

Herb Society of America Pioneer Unit to Meet in Brenham

The September meeting of the Pioneer Unit of the Herb Society of America was held at St. John’s United Church in Burton. Rita Anders of Cuts of Color spoke to us about growing flowers for cutting. Rita grows flowers for Whole Foods and also provides flowers for weddings and other events. While Rita’s business requires flowers on a large scale, the information she provided was useful to the home gardener as well. On Oct. 13, Lauren Simpson will speak to the Pioneer Unit on the topic of “Creating a Pollinator Paradise at Home.” She notes that pollinators face challenges to their survival and that we can all take action to assist them. Lauren will talk about the various pollinators and share techniques for transforming our gardens into native plant gardens that will support wildlife and please our neighbors. She will also share nativeplant seeds harvested from her own habitat gardens. Beginning in early 2015, Lauren transformed her home gardens into a wildlife-friendly habitat, currently a Certified Wildlife Habitat, Monarch Waystation, and Certified Butterfly Garden. The October meeting will be held at Brenham Presbyterian Church, 900 South Jackson St. in Brenham. All interested persons are invited to attend. You can learn more about the Pioneer Unit and about upcoming meetings on their website at www.herbsocietypioneer.org.
