Herb Society of America Pioneer Unit to Meet in Brenham

The September meeting of the Pioneer Unit of the Herb Society of America was held at St. John’s United Church in Burton.

Rita Anders of Cuts of Color spoke to us about growing flowers for cutting. Rita grows flowers for Whole Foods and also provides flowers for weddings and other events. While Rita’s business requires flowers on a large scale, the information she provided was useful to the home gardener as well.

On Oct. 13, Lauren Simpson will speak to the Pioneer Unit on the topic of “Creating a Pollinator Paradise at Home.” She notes that pollinators face challenges to their survival and that we can all take action to assist them. Lauren will talk about the various pollinators and share techniques for transforming our gardens into native plant gardens that will support wildlife and please our neighbors.

She will also share nativeplant seeds harvested from her own habitat gardens. Beginning in early 2015, Lauren transformed her home gardens into a wildlife-friendly habitat, currently a Certified Wildlife Habitat, Monarch Waystation, and Certified Butterfly Garden.

The October meeting will be held at Brenham Presbyterian Church, 900 South Jackson St. in Brenham. All interested persons are invited to attend. You can learn more about the Pioneer Unit and about upcoming meetings on their website at www.herbsocietypioneer.org.
