Gardenia Animal Shelter Update
As of April 27, in take for the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter is 546: 265 dogs and 281 cats in need. As of April 27, the shelter has 95 animals in care: 69 dogs/26 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport to rescue partner.
Emotional Support Pets Enrolled in Texas High School Courtesy of Second Chance
When Dixon and Mary Lou McNair of La Grange first introduced the rest of the family to Second Chance in December of 2022, I had no idea what was in store. During the short visit, I purchased two giant sock monkeys and one large stuffed dog, which I thought would add some levity to my high school classroom. Although my job as an English Teacher in the Houston area centers around helping teens write essays and understand reading pieces, I’m sometimes tasked with encouraging them to relax, so the real work of learning can occur.
AMEN Serves 396 Families in April
The AMEN Food Pantry continued to be remarkably busy in the month of April. A total of 396 families were served for the month for a total of 1215 individuals. Food donations received were 6,615 pounds. Looking back to 2023, the pantry served 256 families and required eightyfour volunteers for a total of 154 hours. A total of 185 volunteers for 314 hours served the pantry this past month. This indicates the increasing food need in our area.
