League of Women Voters Hold Annual Meeting

The League of Women Voters of South Central Texas (LWVSCTX) held its 2026 Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 17, at Shiner Central Station in Shiner. The afternoon combined a civic celebration, an inspiring performance, and the business of setting the League’s course for the coming year.

Koeth Graduates from UT

Michael Koeth, Jr. graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a Minor in Business on May 9. Michael was a member of the Texas Cowboys, an honorary student service organization at UT Austin. He served on their Service and Selection Committees and enjoyed some time firing Smokey the Cannon at football and baseball games. He was also a member of the Texas Iron Spikes, the official service and spirit organization of Texas Longhorns Baseball, where he held the positions of Spirit Chair, Rookie Coordinator, and President. Michael is the son of Mike and Michelle Koeth of Weimar and the grandson of Jo Helen and the late Edward Posas of La Grange and Mike and Marlene Koeth of Carrollton.

Holy Cross Announces June Vacation Bible School

W Holy Cross in Warda will have Vacation Bible School June 15-17 from 6-8 p.m. The Adventure to Remember theme is “Are We There Yet?” In this VBS we will remember Moses-from the Nile to the Burning Bush…..from Plagues to Passover….from Red Sea to Wilderness-and through it all, we see God’s love, protection, and salvation.

Shelter at Capacity as More Than 500 Animals Enter Care in 2026

The Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter is open from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday for all normal operations. The shelter is closed to the public with staff on-site for animal care from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Reclaims are allowed on Monday after 10 a.m. by appointment. If you believe your lost pet may be in care, call (979) 966-0021 to confirm and learn requirements for reclaim.

Deadline for Filing Protests with the ARB*

Usual Deadline Not later than May 15 (or within 30 days after the appraisal district mailed a notice of appraised value to you, whichever is later). Late protests are allowed for good cause if you miss the usual deadline.

Property Tax Protest and Appeal Procedures

Property owners have the right to protest actions concerning their property tax appraisals. You may follow these appeal procedures if you have a concern about: • your property’s appraised (market) value • the unequal value of your property compared with other properties; • your property’s inclusion on the appraisal records; • any exemptions that may apply to you; • qualification for an agricultural or timber appraisal; • the taxing units taxing your property; • the property’s ownership; • the change of use of land receiving special appraisal; • failure of the chief appraiser or appraisal review board (ARB) to send a required notice; • the denial, modification or cancellation of the circuit breaker limitation on appraised value; • the determination of incorrect appraised value and allocation of value of a structure, archaeological site and land necessary for access under a historic site exemption; or • any action taken by the appraisal district or ARB that applies to and adversely affects you.
