After a long Friday night opener, Senior Taylor Cook sent Leopard fans home happy, booting a walk-off 35-yard field goal in overtime to beat Cameron 52-49. Cook was also seven for seven on extra points in the game.

The Schulenburg volleyball team defeated Round Top-Carmine Tuesday in four sets, 25-22, 25-13, 21-25, 2927. Emmrie Marx had 26 kills for the Lady Horns, Haylee Vacek had 12 and Reagan Dusek had eight. Madison Kunschick had four aces. Dusek and Grace Schramek each had four blocks.

The Schulenburg Shorthorns won their first game of the season at home against the Sacred Heart Indians of Hallettsville 35-0. Schulenburg dominated the game defensively, holding the Indians to just 129 yards. Shorthorn Senior quarterback Aaron Janecek threw for 98 yards and ran for 110.

The Flatonia football team rallied from a halftime deficit and used a huge third quarter to blast Louise 33-6 in the season opener for both teams Friday. Flatonia quarterback Beck Zimmerman threw for three touchdowns in that decisive third quarter, two to Kade Geise and one to Keegan Green.

In what was one of the most thrilling – and longest – football season openers in school history, the Leps outlasted Cameron 52-49 in overtime Friday after three hours and 34 minutes of back-andforth drama.

There was no winner in last week’s Pick Em contest. The loses by Cuero and Giddings ruined some otherwise perfect ballots.

The Schulenburg volleyball team won the Silver Bracket Championship at the Goliad Tournament over the weekend. In pool play Thursday the Lady Horns beat Sinton but lost to Goliad and Edna.

On the first night of high school football season, Schulenburg and Flatonia were dominant, while La Grange survived an overtime thriller against Cameron. But all the local teams went home happy, and undefeated. Game stories inside.
