District 28-2A Cross Country Meet

Monday in Shiner at the 282A district cross country meet, the Schulenburg Boys team finished 5th overall led by Kaz Mc-Bride who was 7th with a 3 mile time of 20:11. Kaz advances to the regional meet at A&M Corpus Christi on Oct. 24. Finishing 13th overall for the girls was Ruby Rodriquez with a two mile time of 14:47. Flatonia’s Kaylee Martinez was seventh in the varsity girls race. The Flatonia boys were third as a team. Oscar Guerrero was third and Duke Sodek was fourth.

Fayetteville’s Jaeger Reaches a Level No Other Texas Volleyball Player Has

Fayetteville senior volleyball player Brooklyn Jaeger brings phenomenal power to her kill shot and the stats have shown it. In a recent match vs. Mumford last Friday, Jaeger recorded her 3,000th kill of her career. She is believed to be the first Texas High School player ever to accomplish the feat.

4-H Competes in State Fair of Texas Food Challenge Contest

Several Fayette County 4-H members competed in the State Fair of Texas Food Challenge Contest on Monday, Oct. 3, in Dallas. The Fayette County 4-H Senior Team consisting of Harper Mau, Cooper Mau, Cash Smith, and Mackenzie Poncik placed 1st in Senior Side Dish Category and advanced to the Final Round. They were the Champion Senior Team in the Final Round.

In addition to Friday being the Lil’ Leps Tunnel Run night, it was also Little Leopardette Night, as youngsters were able to come on the field, above, and do a halftime dance with the high school Leopardette Drill Team.

Flatonia Wins Fifth in a Row

The Flatonia Bulldogs remained hot, beating Hearne 3520 Friday for the Bulldogs’ fifth win in a row Friday. Flatonia is 6-1 overall and 3-0 in district. Quarterback Fidel Venegas ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 194 yards and touchdown passes to Dayton Cliffe and Jaidyn Guyton. Guyton had five catches for 107 yards. The Flatonia defense limited Hearne to 249 total yards. Flatonia plays at winless Schulenburg this Friday. Schulenburg was off last week.

La Grange Subvarsity Football Roundup

La Grange JV Purple 39, Smithville 6 The JV Purple beat the Smithville Tigers 39-6 last week to even their record at 3-3 and make them 1-0 in district. Highlights included three touchdown runs by Le’Kayvion Broussard a touchdown run by Elijah Haardt and a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Haardt as well following the touchdown runs. Four 2-pt conversions were successfully completed one by Broussard, one pass from Holdyn Cooper to Julian Sherman and runs by Ethan Tarnowski and Lakeith Williams along with a PAT by Edwin Luna. The Leps travel Thursday October 13th to face the Caldwell Hornets.

Smithville Beats La Grange 14-10 in Defensive Battle

La Grange and Smithville have played one another in football almost every year for the past century. But rarely in this historic rivalry of Highway 71 neighbors have points been so hard to come by. In the district opener for both teams Friday at Leopard Stadium, Smithville beat La Grange 14-10. The win snapped a fourgame losing streak for the Tigers, while the Leps now face an uphill battle to get back in the playoff race. “This was all about perseverance,” said Smithville head coach Cyril Adkins. “These kids deserve to win, but I tell them all the time just because you think you deserve something, nobody’s just going to give it to you.” Neither defense was giving away much of anything Friday.
