Two County Teams Advance, Two Eliminated
Schulenburg
In an epic area round playoff match Saturday in Brenham the Schulenburg volleyball team outlasted Thorndale in a fivesetter thriller.
The Lady Horns won the odd-numbers sets while Thorndale grabbed the even-numbered ones before Schulenburg prevailed 15-12 in the decisive fifth set.
Jessalyn Gipson led the Lady Horns in kills with 17. Mackenzie Kunschick had 12 and Meredith Magliolo added 11. Brooke Redding had six blocks and Magliolo had five.
Kieryn Adams had 26 digs. Avery Helms and Tamara Otto had 25 each. Landry Zapalac had 42 assists. The victory improves the Lady Horns record to 29-16 overall and they advance to play Skidmore-Tynan in the third round Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Port Lavaca Calhoun High School.
La Grange
The La Grange volleyball team lost its second round playoff match to Salado 18-25, 25-15, 13-28, 28-26, 8-15 on Thursday in Elgin.
The loss ends La Grange’s season with a 27-20 overall record. They were district and bidistrict champs but Salado just edged the Lady Leps. The Lady Leps had five seniors: Maddi Fritz, Hailey Hill, Alicia Tisdell, Camille Gonzalez and Elyse Glisson.
Fritz led the Lady Leps in kills Thursday with 13 and Hill had nine. Jena Jobb led in digs with 18. Kylie Trlicek had 16, Hill had 13 and Fritaz had 10. Haylie Cooper had a team-high seven aces and Trlicek had six. Fritz led in assists with 12 and Hill had 11. Tori Harold had six blocks and Hill had two.
RTC
The Round Top-Carmine volleyball team rolled to a win in the area round of the 1A playoffs Thursday, beating Leverett’s Chapel 25-16, 25-6, 25-6. The Cubettes improved to 21-13 with the victory and advance to play North Zulch Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Brenham High School.
In Thursday’s match Mallory Krause had five kills, 10 digs, eight aces and 14 assists. Tess Eilers had five kills and 13 digs. Kaysie Ward had seven kills. Jessica Rohde had two kills and three digs. Jill Eilers had five kills, six digs, three aces and seven assists. Maggie Salinas had 10 digs, two aces and three assists. Kim Rohde had four digs and six aces. Kennedy Flinn, Egypt Woods and Bayley Pitts each had a kill and Dallin Pitts had a dig and an assist.
Fayetteville
The defending state champion Fayetteville volleyball team’s 2022 season came to an end with a second round loss to Neches Friday. The final scores were 25-11, 25-20, 25-15.
Fayetteville was playing without the reigning 1A player of the year Brooklyn Jaeger, who suffered a season-ending knee injury the week before.
Kayme Schley had five kills for the Lady Lions and Kynley Hurst and Tara Vitek each had three. Hurst had three aces. Schley had 10 digs and Rylie Dyer and Marissa Rohde had nine each. Hurst had nine assists.
The Lady Lions end their season with a 38-7 overall record.
