Flatonia freshman basketball player Summer Sodek came into high school ball on a mission as she’s already been in double figures for scoring a handful of times to start the season, also leading her team to a tournament title in Fayetteville this past weekend.

Sodek is the daughter of Flatonia head boy’s basketball coach Chris Sodek and the sister of Bulldog hooper and former Athlete of the Week Duke Sodek. “Summer is just a joy to coach and is very knowledgeable when it comes to the game,” said first-year Flatonia head girl’s basketball coach Robert Gray. “She has a quiet demeanor about her, but speaks loudly through her play. The best attribute about her is the willingness to just be a great teammate. She’s so unselfish and that type of character rubs off on others in our program. She’s been great.”

Sodek’s leadership at such an early stage has made her our choice for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.

Question: How would you

compare AAU ball to high school ball?

Answer: “AAU ball is, I would say, a little bit faster. You see a lot of different athletes and I think AAU just really prepared me for high school and getting me ready.”

Question: Who’s a basketball player you look up to and why?

Answer: “I look up to Paige Bueckers (UCONN). She’s injured right now and she’s been injured for a while, but I like watching her high school games and her college games because she has a style of play that I would like to have.”

Question:What would you say is the best part about your Answer: “I would say just seeing the court and finding open people. Setting my team up for making plays and stuff.”

Question: What’s your favorite basketball memory with your brother and dad?

Answer: “My brother and my dad, we do basketball all the time, but after basketball we usually just play a random, fun game. Just like dodgeball or something after just to have fun.”

Question: Where’s your go-to restaurant and why?

Answer: “Probably Wings ’N More in College Station because it has really good food and good wings.”

Question: If you could be anybody for a day, who would you be and why?

Answer: “Probably Paige Bueckers just to experience a good basketball environment and just see what they do.”

Question: What are your goals when it comes to basketball?

Answer: “Right now, my goal is to just help my team out as much as I can and just be really good this season with my team.”

Question: Where’s your favorite place to play basketball?

Answer: “I like just playing basketball outside and in different environments just to feel different things.”

Question: How have you been able to have so much early success on the court?

Answer: “Probably a lot of practice and the older girls on my team really help me out. Just setting me up and I get a lot of help from others.”

Question: What’s been the most eye-opening thing about high school thus far?

Answer: “Probably that it’s a team sport and that you can’t just rely on one person. You got to help each other out and do everything you can.”

Sodek has the talent and potential to make Flatonia basketball into a strong playoff team.
