State Tournament Notebook
• Fayetteville was the smallest school at the state tournament with an enrollment of 71. Keller, in Class 6A was the largest with an enrollment of 3,154.
The Lions beat Nazareth (enrollment 78) in the state semis and then Kennard (enrollment 80) in the finals.
• Fayetteville catcher Logan Fritsch only hit triples at the state tournament. He hit a pair of triples in the state semifinal win over Nazareth and then in Thursday’s state title game he launched a ball to left that the Kennard outfielder misplayed, and Fritsch ended up on third again, and in the process drove in Reid Gross and Travis Gully to give the Lions a 2-0 first inning lead in the state title game.
That would turn out to be the margin of victory.
• That misplayed ball by Kennard was among a number of miscues in the field that led to several Lions runs.
Meanwhile, Fayetteville made several outstanding defensive plays Thursday.
“We work on defense a lot,” head coach Clint Jaeger said.
