The Schulenburg football team grabbed its first playoff victory since 2013 in memorable fashion, with a 29-16 upset of No. 8-ranked Mason Friday in Wimberley.

“Our kids are really fired up,” said Schulenburg secondyear head coach Walt Brock of the win. “We had some guys that have been injured and we got a lot of those kids back this week, and we had some other kids who really stepped up too.”

“This is a huge win for our program and our community.”

Linebacker Kenny Schramek was one of those Shorthorns who returned from injury who had a big impact on Friday’s game Brock said.

Desmond Lewis (who ran for 101 yards) and quarterback Tyler Ryba (who threw for 74yards and ran for 59) had big games.

Those two ran for touchdowns in the first half, but Schulenburg was still down 16-14 at the break, but the Shorthorn defense held Mason scoreless after halftime.

Meanwhile, Keisean Johnson scored twice in the second half to put Schulenburg up to stay. He returned a fumble 76 yards for a score and then later in the third quarter caught an eight-yard pass from Ryba.

Now the Shorthorns (5-6) advance to play Kenedy (9-2) in the area round. That game will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at Comal ISD’s Pieper Warrior Stadium.

Brock said Kenedy is a runbased Slot-T team that plays a 4-3 defense, big, with a speedy running back.
