Serbin Wins Community League Baseball Crown in La Grange
The Serbin Jackrabbits beat the Weimar Vets by a score of 12-1 in a 7-inning run-rule game to win the Community League Baseball Championship at the Fayette County Fairgrounds Ballpark in La Grange last Sunday afternoon.
“The Rabbits knew the Vets were going to be bringing their shotguns to this one, but the Rabbits came prepared and destroyed the shots with their bats,” said Serbin Manager Eldor Becker.
This is the second straight championship for the Jackrabbits, who also won the league title in 2019. The 2020 and 2021 seasons were not played due to COVID. The Jackrabbits jumped on the Vets early and never let up, taking a commanding 4-1 lead after the 2nd inning, then exploding for 5 runs in the 5th to blow it wide open. Just for good measure, Serbin added another 3 runs in the 6th to put the game away. Ty Kasper was the winning pitcher, only giving up 4 hits in 7 innings. Weimar had 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and committed 2 errors. Serbin erupted with 15 hits, 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and 1 error. Mason Becker was the leading hitter for Serbin, going 4-for-4 with 2 singles and 2 dou- bles. Other top batters were Garrett Oltmann, 3-4; Colter Zoch, 2-4; Shelby Becker, 2-4; Dacota Kaufmann, 1-2 with 2 walks; Zach Berry, 1-4; Ty Kasper, 1-4; and Chase Oltmann, 1-4.
With only nine players suited up, the Jackrabbits lost the season opener to Schulenburg, but rattled off nine straight wins after that to finish with a 9-1 record. Serbin defeated Weimar for the third time this season to win the championship.
“There was a big crowd on both sides cheering the players on, and that’s what it is all about,” Becker stated. “You have to give the fans credit for coming out and supporting the teams – it always helps energize the players.”
