Schulenburg’s Sophomore QB Ryba Comes Up Huge in Rivalry Game
Schulenburg football player Tyler Ryba has taken over the quarterback position for the Shorthorns as a sophomore and has been a great fit for the team’s spread offense. In Schulenburg’s most recent 49-0 win against Weimar last Friday, Ryba rushed for 198 yards and three touchdowns. “For a sophomore, he’s been very mature,” said Schulenburg head football coach Walt Brock. “He helps lead and does a really good job on his reads. He’s done a great job for us.” Ryba stepping into a big role and impressing in the early stages of his career has awarded him a spot for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.
Question: What’s the most important part about being a quarterback?
Answer: “I think just keeping the team together. Keeping their heads on right, keeping their head straight. A lot of mistakes can be made and our team tends to just fall down on each other. So I think just keeping everybody cool calm. That’s the biggest part.”
Question: What’s something you’d like to change about the game of football?
Answer: “I got a personal flag last week for holding the ball out. I think they need to loosen up on high school football rules.”
Question: Do you play any other sports besides football?
Answer: “I play basketball, baseball, and I run track.”
Question: If you had to dress up for Halloween, who or what would you dress up as?
Answer: “I’d dress up as Sully from Monsters Inc.”
Question: What’s your favorite video game?
Answer: “My favorite video game is probably (NBA) 2k. I like to play to 2k.”
Question: Say you’re in a time of need, who’s the first person you call and why?
Answer: “Probably my dad or my mom. I have a very strong connection with them.”
Question: Who’s an athlete you look up to?
Answer: “Probably Kobe Bryant. I like his work ethic.”
Question: What made you want to become a quarterback?
Answer: “I don’t think it was me wanting to be a quarterback. I think that’s just the role I was put in. Eighth grade year, I played a little quarterback. That’s the only year that I’ve really got playing time. My seventh year, I didn’t get much playing time. So I think just growing into it and just trying to get better. I think I’ve developed a lot.”
Question: Other than home field, where’s your favorite place to play football?
Answer: “I like turf fields a little bit more even though they hurt. This year, I like Luling’s turf more. It’s a nice field.”
Question: What are your goals after high school?
Answer: “I want to play sports, but if I can’t play sports and that doesn’t work out, then I think I’m going to look into forensic science.”
Ryba’s ability to use his arm and his legs makes him a more than valuable resource at quarterback.
