Schulenburg’s Brown Having Career Year for Undefeated Angelo State
Going into the regular season finale this weekend, Angelo State University tight end Cason Brown already had achieved collegiate career highs.
The graduate student out of Schulenburg High School had a career-best 11 receptions and two touchdowns through ten games (10-0). Among the five tight ends on the roster, he led the group in receptions and with his 63 receiving yards.
“I’m still mainly a blocking guy,” said the 6-foot-2 Brown, who is completing his final year of eligibility.
He set a career high with four receptions during an Oct. 22 victory over Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He finished with 30 yards and a 1-yard touchdown, the second consecutive game he scored.
“We had a good game plan,” he said. “Two of them came in a two-minute drive. They were trying to get us in the flats and get us out of bounds.”
He helped the team on a touchdown drive in the closing minute of the second quarter. During that series he had a season-long 18-yard catch, then added a 10-yard reception on the next play.
“I ran a wheel route,” he said of the 18-yard gain, “and went along the right sideline. Right after I made my break, the quarterback got me the ball.”
He caught a 1-yard touchdown during a fourth-quarter series in which he had an earlier 1-yard catch. On his score, he said the team lined up with two tight ends on one side.
A defensive back went to cover the other tight end on his route while Brown ran a flat route. “It left me wide open,” he said.
He will compete again in track and field, also his last year of eligibility, and said he completes his master’s degree next fall.
More football Flatonia High graduate Da-Kory Willis of Texas Lutheran University rushed 12 times for a season-high 83 yards in a win over Austin. The junior running back had a 5-yard rushing touchdown. He added two receptions for 8 yards and a 39-yard kickoff return.
Women’s cross country Montserrat De Santiago led Savannah College of Art and Design by placing sixth in a field of 120 at the NAIA Appalachian Challenge 5K. The senior is from La Grange High.
Women’s volleyball Southwestern University sophomore right side Erica Otto had a season-high four digs against St. Thomas. The Schulenburg alumna had two kills and one block.
