Reese Ramirez is a sophomore on the Flatonia High School football team and specializes at middle linebacker on defense. In a hard-fought playoff victory against Ozona last Thursday, Ramirez recorded 14 assisted tackles, one solo tackle and one interception to help his team advance to the next round of the postseason.

“Reese has been very consistent all year,” said Flatonia head football coach Chris Freytag. “Our middle linebacker in our defense is the quarterback of our defense. We’ve put a lot on his plate. He’s really come along and improved each week. Last Thursday night, he probably had his best night as a Bulldog. He has to make all the defensive calls and make sure the front seven’s lined up correctly. He does all of that. He’s so smart. It’s hard for a sophomore to have all of that on their plate and he’s handled it quite well. As he gets older, we can put more and more on his plate because that’s the type of kid he is and he’ll always get us in the right situation.”

Ramirez’ high football IQ and ability to make plays has landed him a spot as this edition’s Player of the Week.

Question: What was it like playing at Jerry Comalander stadium in San Antonio?

Answer: “Hitting people. It’s fun just being able to hit people.”

Question: Who’s an NFL defensive player that you model your game after or look up to?

Answer: “I actually don’t know. But for offense, I watch a lot of Jason Witten.”

Question: What’s your favorite sports show on television?

Answer: “Definitely NFL Network”

Question: If you had to pick a sport to play other than football, what would it be and why?

Answer: “Baseball. I grew up playing it and it’s pretty fun just being able to be out there.”

Question: What’s your music of choice before a game?

Answer: “Definitely hiphop. It hypes me up before a game.”

Question: How does a normal game day look for you?

Answer: “I’m nervous before a game at school. Warming up, I’m kind of nervous too. But after that first big play, it just all goes away.”

Question: If you could travel in a time machine, where would you go and what would you do?

Answer: “I would go to the future and see how it would look”

Question: Say you’re an architect and had to design one structure, what would you design and why?

Answer: “A statue of me because it’s cool.”

Question: If you were granted a superpower of your choice, what would you choose and why?

Ramirez has already taken the reigns for a tenacious Flatoma defense that has brought the team plenty of success.
