Flatonia vs. Shiner

When: 7 p.m. Friday Where: Hallettsville High School Records: Flatonia is 11-1. Shiner is 10-2.

Of Note: This is a heavy-weight battle as Flatonia carries a 10-game win streak against the defending state champ Shiner Comanches. These two teams were district rivals last year and when they met in 2021 Shiner won 42-0. But since then, Flatonia has really improved.

Meanwhile, Shiner went on to go 16-0 last season and won that state title, but they graduated seven offensive starters and six defensive starters off that team.

Texas A&M recruit Dalton Brooks returns and he ran for four touchdowns in last week’s 47-21 win over Mason. Shiner’s two losses this year have come against 3A Hallettsville and Refugio (which is still in the playoffs). Flatonia’s only loss this season was also to Hallettsville. Flatonia is coming off a 56-21 win over Three Rivers in a game that wasn’t even that close. The Bulldogs started the game by jumping out to a 35-0 lead. Flatonia is one of the best 2A teams in the state at throwing the football, averaging over 200 yards a game through the air.

Up next: The winner of this game advances to face the Refugio/Ganado winner in the next round.
