Playoff Football Previews
No. 8 Sinton vs. La Grange
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Rutledge Stadium, Converse
Records: LG is 7-4. Sinton is 10-1.
Of Note: The Leps have won four in a row while the Pirates are on an eight-game win streak. Sinton senior quarterback Rene Galvan is the key for the Pirates, averaging more than 100 yards a game running and 100 yards a game passing this season. His twin brother Rylan ran for six touchdowns in last week’s 68-14 win over Bandera ... LG is led by junior Bravion Rogers, who passed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season last week in a 54-20 win over Manor New Tech. Senior Leps QB Clay Wolff has thrown for 832 yards and 11 TDs and has been splitting time under center with explosive sophomore QB Jaden Williams. Sr. Justin Lewis leads the Leps defense with 150 tackles this season.
Up Next: The winner of this game advances to face the Navarro (8-3) vs. Port Isabel (8-3) victor.
Schulenburg vs. Kenedy When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Comal ISD’s Pieper Stadium
Records: Schulenburg is 5-6. Kenedy is 9-2.
Of Note: After last week’s victory over No. 8-ranked Mason, the sky’s the limit for the Shorthorns who are healthy for the first time since starting the season 2-0. Kenedy’s two losses have come against Taft (35-7) and against Refugio (62-0). Last week Kenedy beat Ben Bolt 41-0 in the first round of the playoffs. The Lions aren’t going to throw the football much (16.8 yards passing per game) but they run the Slot-T offense well, led by Jaydin Chapa, who has run for 991 yards. Last year in the playoffs, Kenedy lost to Mason in this round 41-18.
Up Next: The winner of this game plays the Shiner (11-0) vs. Three Rivers (7-4) game in the next round. Flatonia vs. No. 1 Refugio
When: 6:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Floresville
Records: Flatonia is 5-4. Refugio is 11-0
Of Note: Three of Flatonia’s four losses this season have come against state-ranked teams so the Bulldogs aren’t going to be intimidated by No. 1-ranked Refugio, but the undefeated Bobcats are going to be tough to beat. They have outscored their opponents 685-57 this season and only Edna had scored more than one touchdown against Refugio in a game this year. Fidel Venegas has proved to be a huge weapon for Flatonia. The junior quarterback ran for 156 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 122 yards in last week’s 27-19 overtime victory over Johnson City.
Up next: The winner of this game plays the La Villa (9-2) vs. Ganado (6-5) winner in the next round.
