Navidad Valley CattleWomen held their 8th Annual 5K Ranch Run on August 7 in conjunction with the Schulenburg Festival.

This year they set a record with 161 entries for both the 5K and the one mile events.

Additionally, a record was set with $12,000 in sponsorships. None of this would be possible without the amazing volunteers who helped to make the run the most successful yet, including members, their families, and past, current and future scholarship recipients.

The 5K kicked off bright and early at 7:30 am at Wolters Park. The fastest male was Duke Sodek of Flatonia with a time of 19:27 and the fastest female was Taylor Limbaugh of Schulenburg with a time of 20:56. Immediately after the 5K there was a one mile fun run. Norah Dean of Hallettsville was the fastest youth with a time of 7:48.

Back by popular demand were the family reunion themed prizes. All of these winners received beef gift baskets filled with goodies donated by the Texas Beef Council. Daniel Brown traveled the farthest, coming all the way from Abilene. The most “seasoned” athlete was Lee Miksch, who was 85 years old and the youngest participant was Cadence Beane, who was five years old. The largest family group with nine participants was the Hollas crew who also received a $50 beef gift certificate with their goodies. The funds raised due to the success of this event will be awarded to graduating seniors from Fayette, Lavaca and Colorado counties with an interest in agriculture next school year.

Navidad Valley CattleWomen have presented over $70,000 in scholarships since they first awarded scholarships in 2005. The Navidad Valley CattleWomen, a local chapter of the Texas Cattlewomen, is a non-profit organization that supports and promotes the beef industry. The Navidad Valley local works to support local youth with scholarships and provide quality information on the industry and how to incorporate beef into a healthy diet. Additionally, they work to support the community with targeted outreach projects that include a beefy twist. CattleWomen function collectively to inform consumers of the importance of the industry and of the contributions it makes to the economy of our nation.

The next meeting of Cattle-Women is August 25 at 11:30 AM (location TBD). Prospective members are always welcome. For more information on Navidad Valley CattleWomen please visit www.nvcw.org or contact Cathy Willhoite at (512)-923-3310.
