Meredith Magliolo Jumping to New Heights for Schulenburg
Schulenburg track phenom Meredith Magliolo recently tied for the best mark at regionals (5-3) in the high jump, so she will be heading to the state track championship meet at the University of Texas this week.
She was also a key component of the volleyball team this year on a squad that made a lengthy run in the playoffs.
“Meredith is a hard working young lady that does everything you ask of her,” said track coach and head volleyball coach Donald Zapalac.
“She wants to excel and responds to coaching to make the necessary adjustments. She has a friendly personality that makes other athletes want her to do well.”
Magliolo’s consistent performances and likable character has made her our choice for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.
Question: What are you looking forward to the most at state track?
Answer: “Just the experience. A lot of people who I’ve talked to that have gone to state and a lot of the coaches, they’ve said that the experience is one of the coolest parts about just going. But I’m also just looking forward to being able to compete again and do my best.”
Question: What’s the best part about your volleyball game?
Answer: “Probably my blocking. I think that because I’m so tall, I can get up there at the net and really just be a big part of our defense and be able to block a lot of shots.”
Question: How are you able to have so much success in the high jump?
Answer: “I work really hard everyday and our coach, Coach Anderson, does a really great job of helping me, telling me what I need to fix, and I think that we just work well together and it really has come together this season.”
Question: Who’s your favorite sports team and why?
Answer: “Probably any team at (Texas) A&M just because that’s where both of my parents went and it’s where I’ve always wanted to go. So I just support anything that they do there.”
Question: Where’s a place you’ve been that you’re most fond of?
Answer: “Some summers, my family and I will go down to Cozumel, Mexico. I really enjoy it there because we just hang out on the beach, go scuba diving, do all kinds of fun stuff down there.”
Question: Who’s a person you’re closest with at Schulenburg High School and why?
Answer: “I’m really lucky to have a big group of friends and people that support me, so I think I’m just really close with a lot of people, so it’s hard to pick just one.”
Question: If you went on a trip to the zoo, which animal would you go see first and why?
Answer: “Probably a giraffe just because I always thought that I was kind of like a giraffe just because I’m tall and they’re tall. Also, I just like the way they look. They’re super fun and quirky.”
Question: If you could have your dream car, what would it be and why?
Answer: “I don’t really know. I’m not really super interested in cars, but the car that I’m driving now is just a little Jeep Cherokee and I’m pretty content with that.”
Question: What do you take the most pride in about being an athlete?
Answer: “Just being able to represent my community every week or every track meet. Just knowing that everybody’s supporting me.”
Question: How would you describe a perfect day for you?
Answer: “Just a lot of relaxation and just pretty much relaxing the whole day and getting to do what I want.”
Magliolo recognizes the great support she has and uses it as fuel to perform at a high level in her respective sports.
