Mascheck Beat Out Some Other Interesting Finalists for Flatonia Job
Flatonia ISD released the names of all the applicants interviewed for the boys athletic director and head football coach. The school board hired Brent Mascheck for the position on Feb. 2 to replace Chris Freytag, who resigned following the football season.
A selection committee interviewed Mascheck along with five other candidates. The Record filed a public information act request to obtain the names and resumes of the other five candidates. Flatonia ISD released the information last Friday. The five other candidates were Shawn Alvarez, Jake Wachsmuth, Joel Ryan McIver, Drew Bridges and Josh McKiddy.
Shawn Alvarez has been the athletic director and head football coach at 2A Kenedy ISD since 2019. At Kenedy he broke the football team’s 28-game losing streak and compiled a 25-17 record in four years. Kenedy made the playoffs three years in a row under Alvarez and were backto- back bidistrict champs. Prior to that he was special teams coordinator and defensive secondary coach at 4A Cuero from 2018-2019, and he was part of the coaching staff that led the Gobblers to a state championship in 2018. He was athletic director and head football coach for La Villa from 2015-2016. Prior to that, he served as teacher and coach at Beeville, Freer, George West, Aransas Pass, Culberson County-Allamoore ISD inVan Horn and the Corpus Christi Montessori School. Alvarez is also a veteran of the United States Coast Guard.
Jake Wachsmuth is the current athletic director and head football coach at Shiner St. Paul (TAPPS Div. 4). He has compiled a football record of 130-41 in 14 seasons at St. Paul, including eight state football championships at the private school. He coached at St. Paul from 2008-2010 and 2012-present. He coached in Yoakum (3A) from 20112012. Wachsmuth also served as head track coach throughout his career and led his athletes to 12 state track championships during that time. Prior to St. Paul and Yoakum, Wachsmuth has coached at Ingleside, Tuloso-Midway in Corpus Christi, Bridgeport, Port Lavaca and Premont.
Local folks might recognize the name of Ryan McIver, who was the head football coach and athletic director in Weimar from 2018 until 2022. He currently serves as assistant head coach and special teams coordinator at 5A Chaparral High School in Killeen. McIver led the Weimar Wildcats to their winningest season ever in 2019 with a record of 10-2. The year before they went 8-3. According to his resume, McIver is the winningest coach over a two-year period in the history of Weimar football. Prior to his experience at Killeen and Weimar, McIver coached at Texas City, Lago Vista and Columbia High School.
Drew Bridges is the current athletic director and head football coach at Florence ISD, a 3A school. Prior to that he was athletic director and head football coach at 1A Bartlett. His teams at Bartlett and Florence struggled to find wins. However, he came with experience as an assistant coach at 6A Mayde Creek in Katy ISD and 4A Connally High School.
Josh McKiddy currently serves as run game coordinator at 4A Celina High School, who went 11-2 last year. Prior to that he served as defensive coordinator at Prosper and Sachse. He previously coached at Midland-Lee, Coppell and Keller as well. He was a graduate assistant coach at SMU from 2002-2004. He is also a veteran of the United States Air Force.
