Lions Use Big Second Half to Down Cubs

Logan Fritsch nailed seven three-pointers and the Fayetteville boys used a big second half surge to beat Round Top-Carmine Friday in District 29 boys basketball action.

RT-C actually led most of the first half, and Fayettevilleled by just two at halftime, but the Lions roared late, led by a 32-point night from Fritsch.

“We shot well at first and Seth Brock was hot for us from the three-point line and Kannyn (Goehring) made a few and that kept us in it,” said RT-C head coach Blake Goehring. “Then Logan Fritsch started making shots and we just didn’t have an answer for him.”

Brock led the Cubs in scoring with 25 and Kannyn Goehring added 17. RT-C fell to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in district with the loss.

Cooper Mau scored 13 for the Lions, who improved to 11- 11 overall and 2-1 in district.

Fayetteville was without a pair of starters, but Fritsch made sure that didn’t matter.

“Logan carried the offensive load for us,” said first-year Fayetteville head coach Jake Diggs. “He stepped up.”

Diggs said some defensive adjustments were key to winning the second half.

“Their No. 45 (Goehring) was making a few shots and we played a little closer on him and we were able to keep them off the offensive boards in the second half,” Diggs said.

While Friday’s win keeps the Lions in the thick of the playoff hunt, RT-C now faces an uphill battle to get back into postseason contention.

“We’ve just got to keep working hard,” Goehring said. “We just have eight guys, we can’t even practice five-on-five. I get some ex students up here when I can. But if they keep working, hopefully we grow as district goes on.”
