LG’s Bass Hoping to Cap Senior Year With Another Run to State
Fayette Co. Record’s Athlete of the Week
La Grange senior track runner Hailey Bass covers tons of ground for the Leps. Bass recently snagged the crown in the 400 meter run district championship along with a come from behind victory at the district meet in the 4x400 relay. She’s also qualified for state several times. “First of all, Hailey is a competitor through and through,” said La Grange head track coach Leslie Coltrain. “She is somebody who always comes out here and works hard. She knows exactly what it takes at this level. She takes a massive amount of pride in what she does on the track.” Bass’s steady contributions have given her the nod for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.
Question: How are you able to have so much success on the track?
Answer: “Really, prioritizing my time has certainly helped with how many things I’m juggling at once. Putting in the extra hours shows up on the field, so that certainly helps. Having the extra work ethic.”
Question: Do you play any other sports besides track?
Answer: “I do not, but I do a lot of weight lifting.”
Question: Who’s a person you look up to and why?
Answer: “My mom. I respect her work ethic and I respect who she is as a person. I look up to her in those ways.”
Question: What’s your favorite memory on the track?
Answer: “My favorite memory is when I broke my one minute for the 400. I remember me and coach running up and down the field, skipping and holding hands together because we were so proud of breaking that time. That was last year.”
Question: What are your plans after high school?
Answer: “I plan on taking over my mom’s two businesses as manager once she moves, and letting my own business take off, which is called ‘Glitter & Goats.’”
Question: Where’s place you’ve visited that you’d like to visit again?
Answer: “The UT (University of Texas) stadium where we did state.”
Question: What’s it like managing school and sports?
Answer: “You really have to manage your time properly. I’m in the work program, so I get out an hour earlier than everyone else, which certainly helps. So I have school, then work, then I have to come for practice, then I have to go back to work. I’m usually working until 10 o’clock.”
Question: How would you describe athletics in Texas?
Answer: “Texas is certainly bigger than other states, so you have a lot more competition. Something that’s unique about Texas athletes is our heat tolerance.”
With Bass’s current agenda in sports and business, she’s already way ahead of the game.
