Navasota 42, La Grange JV Purple 6

The La Grange JV Purple lost 42-6 to Navasota on Thursday. The coaches said the guys did a lot of good things and fought to the end. The passing connection from Bennett Barber and Nathan Scott was a bright spot. The two connected several times throughout the game, including a 42 yard touchdown. The JV teams travel to Gonzales on the 22 as they continue district play.

7th Grade Leps Down Bellville

It was a tough beginning to the 2020 7th grade Leopard football season. The first two games, Lago Vista and then against Lexington resulted in scoreless losses for the young team. It wasn’t until the 3rd ballgame of the season, against Cuero, that the 7th grade Leopards would put up their first points of the year, scoring twice. “Although we didn’t come out on top that game,” Coach Patrick Walker said, “you could tell the kids were getting more comfortable with our offense, and understanding better what to do.”

This would be a crucial factor for the following week, as the Leopards hit the road again to face the Bellville Brahmas.

The game started well with the Leopards putting together a long drive that ended with quarterback Oliver Gunn scamper ing 34 yards for the first score of the game. Gunn would handle the duties again on the two point conversion to make in an 8-0 game. The offenses would go back and forth until Bellville broke free on a toss from scrimmage and managed a score of their own. The Leopards held defensively on the two point conversion attempt leaving the score 8-6 in favor of La Grange. The Leopards would later add a score when tailback Ramon Ortiz would take a toss 66 yards for the touchdown. The ensuing two point conversion, a bootleg pass from Gunn to tight end Jeffery Cabrera, would extend the La Grange lead to 16-6. However, despite very good defense play, the next two scores would belong to the Brahmas, and the Leopards would find themselves behind 22-16 when they would get the ball for the last time. With just 1:56 left in the fourth quarter, the Leopards began a drive that would eat most of the clock and cover approximately 70 yards. As the drive got closer to the goal line the Brahma defense stiffened. It wasn’t until 4th and goal with :09 remaining that another bootleg pass from Gunn to Cabrera would allow the Leopards to tie the score, leaving :03 of regulation play. And on the two point conversion, once again Ramon Ortiz would take a toss and head straight for the endzone pylon, leaping across as he headed out of bounds, to secure the Leopards 24-22 victory.

“The kids played really hard, both offensively and defensively,” said Coach James Magness, “it was a very good win.” Walker would later share with the group, that in his 11 years at La Grange ISD, although they hadn’t played Bellville every year, that was his first victorious squad over the Brahmas. The Leopards will be at home this Thursday against Gonzales.
