LG Girls Beat Shiner in Home Opener
The La Grange girls basketball team has been on a sustained run of excellence the last several years, and they are coming off a 28-9 record last season.
But how could they survive the graduation of one of the most prolific scorers in school history, Aysia Grant?
The Lady Leps seemed to answer that question in Tuesday’s home opener, a 33-21 win over Shiner.
This version of the La Grange team will rely on a strong defense.
“I told the girls I was really pleased with the defensive effort,” said longtime La Grange girls basketball coach Heath Golan. “You can win a lot of varsity games only giving up 21 points.”
La Grange took control of the game early, allowed just a single point in the second quarter and led 18-9 at halftime. Shiner hung around in the second half but could never close the gap. Keslyn Davis led La Grange in scoring with 14 points and Katelyn Allen added 10.
Davis is a senior and reigning district Defensive MVP. Also returning for La Grange this season is Camille Gonzalez, a first team all-district selection last year, though she will be sidelined the first few weeks of the season because of a shoulder injury. 2021 second team all-district player Tori Harold also returns for the Lady Leps as does Allen, who was a honorable mention all district player
See last season. Another varsity returnee, Rachel Matocha saw a lot of time last season.
Varsity newcomers include Kylie Trlicek, Landri Hernandez, Maddy Kates, Phoebe Tucker, Railla Bradley and Xeriah Jimenez.
“I think we did great for a first game,” Davis said. “The beginning of the season is never very clean. We’re a scrappy team. We had a lot of heart in that game, and I think that’s just a glimpse of the heart we have.”
