Leps Fall to Schulenburg, Brenham

After starting the season with two straight wins, the La Grange boys basketball team found the going a little tougher this week as the Leps lost by 10 Monday at Schulenburg and then lost 56-39 at home Tuesday afternoon to Brenham.

“We struggled in the half court zone sets,” said La Grange head coach David Cooper after Tuesday’s game. “Brenham puts pressure on you, they have length and we just had a hard time finding good looks. That’s something we’re going to have to improve on for sure.”

Despite the struggles, La Grange bounced back from a nine-point halftime deficit to cut the Brenham lead to just two midway into the third quarter.

“After cutting it to two, then we gave up like three easy buckets on the other end,” David Cooper said. “We should have more energy after that but it seemed like we got lazy on the defensive end and they pulled away again.”

David Cooper said his Leps should really be helped by the impending return of two injured play-ers, Nate Scott and Eli Roberts.

“We’ve got a lot of guys playing a lot of minutes and it’s tough to be your best when that’s happening,” David Cooper said. Jaxon Cooper led the Leps in scoring with 11 Tuesday. Ty Trlicek added 10. Cooper was also the team leader in Schulenburg with 11 points. Kaz McBride scored 15 to lead the Shorthorns in that game.

“We just had too many turnovers today,” Jaxon Cooper said. “We’ve got the experience. We’ve got eight seniors. We know how one another plays, so that should help us in the long run.”

La Grange returns to action against Wharton at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
