La Grange softball player Landri Hernandez is a multisport athlete who also plays sports such as basketball and track. Hernandez is the starting shortstop for the softball team, the starting shooting guard for the basketball team, and has been winning a bunch of 400 meter races in track.

“She is a competitor,” said La Grange head softball coach Amanda Arlund. “She’s got fight in her. She’s the one who when times are tough or it’s a tight game, you want her on your side. You want her in your corner for sure. She’s a go-getter, she’s a hustler, she always wants more. Just a great athlete and all those things that she does in all the other sports play into that. She’s a great leader on the field, too. Talks a lot.”

Hernandez’ body of work in a number of sports has made her our selection for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.

Question: Out of all the sports you play, which one do you like the most and why?

Answer: “I would have to say softball just because I’ve been playing it since I was four years old and I’ve been on a select team, which has really built me as a player overall. So I would have to say softball.”

Question: What part about softball do you like better, fielding or hitting?

Answer: “Definitely fielding. I’ve just always loved diving out for balls, laying out, trying to get everything you can. I just love fielding a lot.”

Question: Who’s a softball teammate you usually sit with for team meals?

Answer: “Probably Sarah Kay. Me and her have a lot in common and she’s probably my best friend on the team. We have a good connection on the field and off the field, especially since she’s the second baseman, so it’s good to have good middle infield chemistry.”

Question: What’s your favorite event to run in track?

Answer: “4x4. It’s just the last race of the day, everyone’s tired, everyone wants to go home, it’s probably freezing, and a lot falls on that race. You get 20 points if you win and it’s really just everyone putting everything they have out there.”

Question: Who’s a basketball player you look up to?

Answer: “Either Keslyn (Davis) or Camille (Gonzalez). They were great leaders for me this past year. I learned a lot from both of them and they’re amazing people.”

Question: What kind of shoes do you wear for basketball?

Answer: “I wear Kyries for basketball.”

Question: Where’s a place you’ve always wanted to go?

Answer: “I’ve always wanted to go to Bora Bora. That sounds fun.”

Question: Which do you like better, McDonalds or Whataburger and why?

Answer: “Definitely Whataburger. I just love their fries there more even though they’re kind of the same. After football games, we all go to Whataburger. It’s just a small town thing and they only have them in Texas, which makes it even better.”

Question:Who’s a singer you like?

Answer: “Probably Rod Wave. I don’t really listen to that much music, but probably Rod Wave.”

Question: How would you describe a normal day for you at La Grange?

Answer: “I wake up and my grandma’s always there. I go to school, go through all seven periods, then after school is when it gets hectic. I go to track until five, then I stay at the softball field until 6:30. If we don’t have games or anything, then I have to go coach my little dribblers team, or church, or something like that. So I stay pretty busy.”

Hernandez is more than valuable in all the sports she plays and is a great representation of La Grange athletics.
