Lady Leps Win Hubbert’s Debut as Soccer Head Coach
Win No. 1 for new La Grange head coach Lauren Hubbert was special.
The Lady Leps dominated Wharton 3-0 Monday at Leopard Stadium as Hubbert won her debut as girls soccer head coach here.
“I am beyond excited,” Hubbert said. “It’s a very sweet feeling. I’ve been wanting this for a very, very long time and I’m happy it’s here.”
Hubbert is a former collegiate star at Lamar University in Beaumont, who played semiprofessional soccer for a year before arriving in La Grange last year when her husband got a job at the Fayette Power Project.
“I showed up and said I’d love to help out,” Hubbert said.
She was a volunteer assistant last season under Chris Westall, who has moved over to be an assistant boys coach this season. Hubbert immediately made her mark on the team and was offered the head coach position going into this school year.
She inherits a team that went 13-6 last season and was second in district, but also one that graduated a huge senior class of players.
But clearly, several playmakers remain. Natalie Orona and Ellee Sodolak scored goals Monday and the Lady Leps were also the beneficiary of a Wharton owngoal that La Grange’s Elizabeth Hart got a touch on.
Hubbert said she was also impressed with La Grange’s corner kicks Monday.
“We are getting more and more comfortable with each other every day,” Hubbert said. “I’ve been blessed with a great group of girls. I’m so excited.”
The Lady Leps play at the Navasota Tournament this weekend.
