Before the game was called because of malfunctioning lights Tuesday, it only took the Lady Leps softball team a few minutes to show they were the better team than Nixon-Smiley.

The La Grange girls jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the one inning played.

That frame was highlighted by a towering two-run homer by Madi Adams that slammed hard against the scoreboard beyond the outfield wall.

Iylah King singled and scored, Landri Hernandez doubled and scored, and Brooke Ulrich and Melissa Gonzales also hit doubles.

Ulrich pitched one inning of shutout ball, striking out three.

Now the Lady Leps (9-6) turn their attention to district play, which begins next Tuesday at home against Smithville.

And La Grange is peaking at the right time. After a slow start to the season, the Lady Leps have now won nine of their last 10 games.

“The girls fought early on. It was just slow,” said La Grange head coach Robert Young. “We had four or five that came from basketball that were going to complete the rest of the team. They’ve done a great job. We went 5-1 at the Seguin Tournament last week. Hopefully we can keep it rolling. ” – Jeff Wick
