Leps Dominate Katy Harmony 62-7
Katy Harmony didn’t bring a band, cheerleaders or even fans to Friday’s game.
But the Leps made enough noise for everyone.
In a dominating homecoming night showing against Harmony (a four-year-old charter school that’s still trying to find its footing and doesn’t even have a home stadium) La Grange scored nine touchdowns from eight different players to roll to a 62-7 victory.
It was the district opener for both teams. La Grange (32) extended its win-streak to See three games, while Harmony (0-5) remained winless.
“It’s always nice to start off district 1-0,” said La Grange head coach Kyle Cooper. “Proud of the kids. Lot of explosive plays tonight.”
La Grange scored 34 points in the first quarter on touchdown runs from Dillan Johnson and Eli Gillum, interception returns for scores by Howard Holmes and Rogan Mihatsch, and the first of two Klayton Michalka touchdown catches.
Gillum only threw the ball twice Friday and both were touchdowns to Michalka – of 30 and 20 yards.
La Grange never punted in the game. Koen Zbranek also snagged an interception.
Even before halftime many of the Leps starters became spectators, and the La Grange reserved continued to roll.
“This is a very deep team,” Cooper said. “That’s one of the best assets we have.”
Back-up quarterback Chris Supak (who is also a starting linebacker) ran for a 29-yard touchdown to bring the halftime lead to 48-0.
At halftime, La Grange senior lineman Trey Brumley was crowned homecoming king, alongside queen Aaliyah Cruz.
“I’m feeling great, I’m very thankful,” Brumley said. “It was a great all-around win for the team and we’re ready for next week.”
Jeremiah Ferguson and Dillan Schlabach each ran for their first-ever varsity touchdowns in the second half.
“It feels amazing. That was the first touchdown of my varsity season and I’m hoping to get a couple more down the road,” Schlabach said.
“I’m feeling pretty happy but I couldn’t do it without the upper classmen always pushing us to get better,” Ferguson said.
Harmony did have something to celebrate when Jaden Okonu returned a kick 75 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
A lot of La Grange fans even cheered for the Wildcats on that play, making up for the empty visitors side support.
Things definitely get a lot harder for the Leps this week as they host La Marque (3-3, 1-0 in district), which is coming off a 62-0 dismantling of previously unbeaten Brazosport.
“La Marque is very athletic, big up front on both sides of the football. They have a dangerous quarterback, good inside linebacker with multiple (college) offers,” Cooper said. “It’s going to be a tough game. We’ve got to put a good game plan together and go execute.”
