La Grange vs. Gonzales
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: La Grange
Records: LG is 3-4 overall and 0-2 in district. Navasota is 1-6 overall and 0-2 in district.
Of Note: It’s been a rough start to district play for the Leps, but a win over Gonzales this week could begin to turn that around ... The Apaches have struggled this year, their lone victory being a 67-22 win over Jarrell. Last week the Apaches lost to Smithville 43-15 in a game that wasn’t even as close as the score indicated. Smithville was up 29-0 at halftime in that one. Gonzales really had trouble running the football in that game, rushing for just 56 total yards, though Gonzales is averaging 171 yards per game on the ground. Apache sophomore quarterback Jarren Johnson completed just nine of his 23 passes for 77 yards ... La Grange has scored 48 points combined over its first two district games but doesn’t have anything to show for it. Navasota scored 22 unanswered against the Leps last week to win 42-21. The week before that Cuero defeated La Grange 38-27 ... La Grange had two offensive and two defensive starters sidelined last week. Quarterback Matthew Johnson (a University of Tulsa commit), who has played in just part of three games this season said he expects to be able to play this week. La Grange’s D.J. Taylor has now rushed for 1,142 yards this season and 15 touchdowns. Last week he ran for two touchdowns and 154 yards.
Last meeting: The Leps haven’t played the Apaches since 2017 when Gonzales won 23-13 in one of the closest games of La Grange’s winless season that year. The Leps got a pair of field goals from Alan Orona and a Brock Gardiner touchdown run but it wasn’t quite enough.
