La Grange Girls Dominate Giddings
With every passing game, the La Grange girls send a stronger and stronger message that the District 22-4A basketball title is their’s for the taking.
With Tuesday’s complete dismantling of Giddings, the first place Lady Leps won 57-21 to improve to 5-0 in district.
“We’re peaking at the right time and a lot of that has to do with being healthy. The last two games are the first we’ve played with most everybody back,” said La Grange head coach Heath Golan.
La Grange had a trio of players reach double figures Tuesday. Landri Hernandez had 16 points, Keslyn Davis had 12 and Camille Gonzalez had 10.
Giddings was led in scoring by Kaylon Metcalf, who had six points.
Gonzalez and Davis have both missed significant time with injuries this season.
“I’m so excited to be back. I hated having to be on the sideline, I was cheering the team on, but it’s great to be back,” Gonzalez said.
“We shared the ball really well tonight,” said Lady Leps senior guard Katelyn Allen. “A lot of us have been playing together since middle school and we’re good when we are all together.”
Where the Lady Leps excelled Tuesday was on defense. Their full-court press fueled them to a 19-9 lead after the first quarter and they never looked back.
Throughout the game, La Grange steals resulted in fast break opportunities, and Giddings could never relax.
Hernandez, in particular, was a matchup nightmare for Giddings defensively.
“We preach it from Day 1, great defense leads to easy offense,” Golan said. “We get a tipped ball or a steal and then we can get out and run. I like our speed. If we can keep that kind of defense up, I like our chances.”
The Lady Leps return to action Friday at last place Manor New Tech. That will conclude the first half of district play.
One more perfect run through district and that 224A title will officially be La Grange’s a month from now.
